The Acolyte Creator Had To Fight To Get This Iconic Star Wars Line On The Show

"I got a lot of feedback that I shouldn't put that in."

Beyond "May the Force be with you," one of the most-quoted lines of dialogue in the Star Wars universe is "I have a bad feeling about this." Both lines are featured in the first few episodes of the new Star Wars TV show The Acolyte, but the second one showing up wasn't a given.

Series creator Leslye Headland told Entertainment Weekly that she had to fight to include this line in The Acloyte, which Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett) says to express his uneasiness.

"That was hard to get that in," she said. "I'm going to be honest. I got a lot of feedback that I shouldn't put that in. But I just feel like when you get the opportunity to do Star Wars, you're just going to shoot your shot. And 'I have a bad feeling about this' is incredibly iconic."

Headland said there was concern that it wouldn't be smart to just "drop it in" without the line carrying the kind of significance it should. "But I think we found a good way to justify it and make it feel natural and still be an homage," Headland said.

Barnett, who delivered the line, joked that he was feeling trepidatious about saying the line. "I had a bad feeling about saying that 'bad feeling' line," he said with a laugh.

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) originally said the line, "I have a bad feeling about this," in the 1977 original Star Wars. The line has appeared in numerous other live-action and animated Star Wars projects over the years--you can see a supercut of all the major mentions in the video below.

The first two episodes of The Acolyte are out now on Disney+, and the remaining six episodes will debut Tuesdays until Season 1 wraps up on July 16.

GameSpot's The Acolyte review for the first four episodes scored the series an 8/10. Don't miss our Easter Egg breakdown of the first two episodes.
